Panamá-Canal Railroad, Colon

3.7
The 1849 California Gold Rush led to a sudden and desperate demand for transportation of hopeful gold miners to California, and thus Panamá-Canal Railroad was born. Construction began in 1850 and the first official journey took place in 1955. The railway was coined a transcontinental railroad--the first of its kind-- connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through Central America with 77 km (48 mi) of rail running parallel to the Panama Canal. The rail provides both freight and passenger service, offering a scenic view of ships, jungle, and wildlife. Panamá-Canal Railroad is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Colon Edition.

  • This is a trip that should not fail to do for those who visit Panama. This trip connects the city of Panama to the city of colon, accompanied always along its 80 kms of extension, the channel that connects the Pacific to the Atlantic. During the trip will certainly observe the large ships circulating in the canal, but above all see in a different perspective the jungle, the lake Gatun and its natural beauties. The train has a panoramic carriage and between the carriages there is a wide area, open to the outside but covered, which allows to travel standing and get the best photos. The train has bar service and on the trip is toed with a coffee and with a small box containing, biscuits and other sympathas. The trip starts in Panama City, about 8 H and the return takes place at 17h. The price of each trip is 25 USD. Given that the city of colon, does not seem to be especially safe, I recommend that you can predict the return to Panama City, by another means of transport.

  • Highly recommended for those who love technology. The film gives a good picture of the origin of the locks. With a taxi driver drove there, he also showed us more and told a lot about the area. The jungle where American soldiers were trained for Vietnam, the new bridge and the prison and the commercial port area.
