The World Heritage-listed Archaeological Site of Chavin represents a complex containing ruins and artifacts from the ancient Chavin civilization, which thrived well over two thousand years ago. Excavated in 1919, the site is situated in the High Andes at an altitude of 3,177m (10,423 ft). See terraced temples, main square, underground galleries, and other stone structures built by an advanced pre-Incan culture. Other highlights include animalistic sculptures, megaliths, pottery, and other items exhibited at the onsite museum.
