Lake Churup, Huascaran National Park

#4 of 11 in Things to do in Huascaran National Park
Hike uphill for around two hours to reach Lake Churup, a scenic body of water in a remote area, surrounded by tall peaks. Less known and frequented than other lakes in the region, the route offers a good option for those wanting to get off the beaten track. Set off on the chalk path, which reaches stepp inclines in places. You'll need to scramble up one portion of the hill, using steel wires wrapped in rubber for support. Once you've reached the deep blue lake, try to frame the perfect photo with the mountains in the background. Wear suitable footwear, bring plenty of water and food, and don't attempt to walk unless you're ready for the uphill scramble section. • A trek of between 2 and a half hours and 3 hours, the last part you have to climb on the rocks with ropes, which can bring some danger to people who are not accustomed to doing this type of activities. There is an optional route that takes you directly to the viewpoint, towards the top of the lagoon. You must take the left path where you say "Churup Optional" and climb a small mountain that is on the left, this as long as you want to avoid going through the ropes. The scenery is spectacular and it is very close to Huaraz, about half an hour. To get there you have to take a combi that costs 10 suns. We opted to take a taxi that charged 15 suns per person the way and returned to pick us up, Cobrándonos 10 suns per person. The entrance to the Huascarán Park is 11 Suns for Peruvians and 30 soles for foreigners. The hike is mostly up, with some flat parts. Again, be careful with the ropes, especially for people who are not accustomed.

  • The hike to the lagoon is perhaps the most classic hike in the province of Huaraz. You start at Pitec, or lower in Llupa. From Pitec to the lagoon are two to three hours depending on your physical state. No walking experience 4 to 5 hours. Excellent for Aclimatizar.

  • Beautiful lake, but be prepared for steep way. You have to make 700m up in 5km. It was quite difficult, because of altitude. We got some headache and earache. Drink a lot of water and enjoy breathtaking views.
  • Very expensive (30 Soles) for a 1.5 hrs trek compared to the salary of a peruvian. Nobody takes care if you found your way out of the national park. Somebody just fills his pockets and doesent care if the people are alright.
