  • We missed going to the second floor which holds most of the material. I'm not sure if it's open on Sunday, but if it is I think we are going back for another visit.  more »
  • We love books. So we entered the Evora public library more out of curiosity. Surprise! Second floor surrounds you with books from 14th and 15th century - they have older, but not for public, only...  more »

  • after an uphill hike at 3 noon in July, I arrive and find access to the forbidden room. while I'm standing in front of the forbidden sign passing by and thinking what to do, on the right hand I see a rather large room (for about 20 users) where there is a gentleman who looks at me very hostilely and another gentleman who reads a magazine. Approaching them and the hostile-looking gentleman hurriedly up to the door of the room in a gesture to prevent him from entering. I ask if I can sit in the room to work with my laptop and he says no because it's a reading room and I take the place off other users. Sorry? but if there's only one person besides you, I tell you. and he says: ya, but if someone else comes? anyway, how eager some people can make a living. hostile gentleman, if you're reading me, know that I want all people like you to die out one day. that day the earth will be a much more HUMAN place.

  • The Public Library of Évora (BPE), which in 2005 celebrated 200 years of existence, was founded by Archbishop Friar Manuel of the Cenacle, a powerful, generous and cultured clergyman, one of the most prominent figures of the Portuguese illuminism. At present, BPE is proud to be one of the oldest and richest libraries in Portugal, which is unquestionable in terms of its collections. The BPE simultaneously fulfils two missions: as an asset library and general research, it strives to collect, safeguard and disseminate a rich documentary heritage; As a public library, it works towards facilitating the access of the local community to education, information and knowledge, and also to recreation and leisure. The BPE Estate includes 664 incunabula and 6445 printed books of the 16TH century, in addition to several cores of handwritten documents, cartography, printed music and more than 20000 titles of periodical publications. Since 1931, BPE has benefited from the Legal deposit, which has contributed to its richness and comprehensiveness in terms of current bibliography, reaching its collections to more than 612,000 volumes.
