  • Than you should visit this place. Best way is, with your own car. Older than Stone Henge and not so impressive, but still worthwhile.  more »
  • I love standing stones and these were plenty interesting. Some of them have carvings on them but they are very faint.  more »

  • There are three significant megalithic sites near Evora. The most impressive is the Cromlech of Almendres. This is the biggest megalithic monument in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the oldest in the world, created 2,000 years before Stonehenge at a time when mankind in this part of the world was transitioning from hunter-gatherers to herders and farmers. This cromlech has approximately 100 monoliths. Throughout the ages, there has been some additions to the original layout, which confuses the shape considerably as at first glance the stones appear to have been placed haphazardly. The original pattern was almost certainly an open horseshoe facing towards the rising sun. This is borne out by the Almendres Menhir close by, which seen from the cromlech, indicates the sunrise at the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. This menhir is oval-shaped, around 3.5 metres high, and has a shepherd’s crozier engraved in shallow relief on one side. The third monument, unrelated to the previous two, is the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro dolmen on the outskirts of Evora, close to the small village of Valverde. This is a more recent archaeological site, only around 6000 years old. This dolmen is a collective funerary monument. The granite supports were about 6 metres in height making it the tallest in the world and resting on these supports was a protective cover called a tumulus, which can be seen nearby.
  • A dirt road and a bit of a walk through a narrow path. Great view of the surrounding area.
