Castelo de S. Jorge, Lisbon

4.2
Castelo de S. Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. Explore one of the city's most popular tourist sites by foot, take in views from its high vantage point, and discover the castle's archeological and historic relevance. Plan to see Castelo de S. • Very nice testimony of the history of Lisbon and of Portugal in General. It takes a little courage to access it but the game is worth the effort. The ruins of the old Royal Palace and a magnificent panorama of the city are discovered. Absolutely.

  • An unforgettable stop in Lisbon. Go to the ticket office early because then the rows get longer in the late morning. Take advantage of the free guided tours that are held inside the castle, I followed the one in Spanish from 10:30 to 12:00 and the guide, Mario, was great. Really visit the monuments with a guide that manages to contextualize and clarify the whole makes the experience unforgettable. The site is also suitable for children who will have fun running in the squares, see the Peacocks and the walkings of Ronda. Inside there is also a bar for every eventuance.

  • Beautiful old Castle with the most magnificent view over the rooftops of Lisbon! Worth the up hill trek through old charming neighborhoods with plenty of street art. The peacocks were fun to watch and quite tame. They will gently eat from your hand! Don’t miss the little museum with all the old tile and pottery along with all the restoration photos. Definitely worth the 10€ entrance fee. We’ve been back three times!
  • Castelo de S Jorge is very famous for visiting and buying gifts. Castle is located in the center of Lisbon. It is very old but marvelous. It is very usual to see lots of people over here. Most of the people are tourist. We can see lots of handcrafts and monuments there. It is very famous for tourists in Portugal. The Castle is accessible. We can visit by Bus, Tram, Car as well. We can see lots of beautiful places of Lisbon from here. We have to be very careful while visiting the Castle. It is better to avoid burglars. We have to pay attention to our Stuffs. I strongly suggest you to visit here. I really appreciate the art there. :)
