Ponte 25 de Abril, Lisbon

4.4
#28 of 1,200 in Things to do in Lisbon
Longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and quite similar to it in appearance, Ponte 25 de Abril connects Lisbon to Almada and services around 380,000 people daily. With a length of 2,277 m (7,470 ft), it's one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe. Because of heavy seismic activity in the region, it was built using the deepest foundation in the world, which reaches 80 m (262 ft) down into the riverbed. This massive red bridge can be a majestic addition to your holiday photo archive, or a picturesque backdrop for a picnic. You can cross it by car or by train. • Originally known as the Salazar Bridge, which was originally named after the then Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, it was renamed the name from the day the revolution broke out, shortly after the carnation revolution on April 25, 1974. It was a large fishing bridge with a length of 2,277 m.

  • The 25 de Abril Bridge loses in km to Vasco da Gama, but in beauty is amazing. From Cais de Lisboa you can take beautiful pictures of her.

  • The view from on top of the bridge is nice. You get to know the structure better. However, it is a bit noisy and unfortunately you cannot see downtown Lisbon from up there. It would be very nice around the sunset time.
  • one of the most wonderful bridges in the world! in my opinion. look up the name and learn something about the revolution! and: its LONGER (not higher though) than Golden Gate Bridge, (-sorry SF), but true.
