Landmark · Tourist Spot
Now an elaborate and decorative waterfront square, Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) was once home to the royal palace. Before the Great Earthquake of 1755, the royal family lived here. Today, the square acts as a port of entry to Lisbon. Meet with friends or begin your tour of the city at this central square, which houses the main tourism office on its west side. The square features a statue of King Jose I, a triumphal arch, and the Lisboa Story Center--an interactive museum. Explore the square and consider stopping in nearby restaurants and cafes, such as the famous 18th century Café Martinho da Arcada. Use our Lisbon trip planner to add Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) and other attractions to your Lisbon vacation plans.

  • This is one of the most beautiful plazas in the world according to my Lisbon tour guide, because in one of its sides it has a beautiful river view. It is s very important plaza where important celebrations are made. For example, new Year's Eve. It also has an important historical content because in that place they killed the kings and ended the monarchical model.
  • A beautiful square with a lot of eateries lined on all sides. The architecture is magnificent!!!! So clean and well maintained. In fact the paved stones look polished. It's the wear and tear of millions of people and tourists who visit there. The river side is so pleasant and the walk along the river side is refreshing. It is serene, calm and peaceful. The best pineapple slices and juices are sold here by friendly cart vendors. Artists sell their paintings and sketches. You can take a jetty or boat ride. I loved this part of Lisbon and a must visit while in Portugal.
