Palacio Nacional de Mafra, Mafra

4.6
Considered one of the most stunning Baroque structures in the region, Palacio Nacional de Mafra was built as a second home for the royal family. Picked for its proximity to fruitful hunting grounds, this palace was designed by German architect Joao Frederico Ludovice in the 18th century for King John V. View the palace's famous facade, visit the site's historical convent, and walk through its basilica, which acts as a central axis for the entire complex and contains six historical pipe organs and 92 bells. As you tour this elaborate structure, note its spectacular library, which holds about 40,000 rare books, some dating back hundreds of years. • This is a very interesting place to visit. Incredibly large. A lot of history as a place of relaxation of the nobility. The library is fantastic to see. Many areas have 30 foot ceilings, matching marble on floors and walls. One of the most surprising places to visit in the region; a must see.
  • The palace is gargantuan. We didn't go in (if that's possible), because we were with our wonder dog. We wandered and popped into a couple of shops and had a decent enough lunch. There's a nice square across from the palace where you can sit under beautiful old trees and have coffee. All in all, Mafra is nice for killing a couple of hours.
