You'll find Livraria Lello fascinating even if you're not into books. A bookstore with loads of character not found in malls, this building from the early 20th century features Neo-Gothic details that add a punch of magic to the usual shopping experience. "Harry Potter" author JK Rowling, who lived in Porto in the 1990s, allegedly used one of the shop's twisting stairways for inspiration. Stop by and you might be inspired to read--or write--something too. If you make the visit, apart from the famous staircase, the bookcase itself is very beautiful and has a multitude of books in all languages. One thing that I found very interesting is that the ticket costs 5 euros but if you buy a book you discount that amount of the purchase, so it is a way to encourage reading and not be crossed as opportunists to charge entry to see the bookcase.
Well worth queueing to have a look inside this amazing shop. It is rammed with tourists but still a beautiful shop. more »
Is this the world’s most beautiful bookshop? Tourists and locals may agree it’s worth a visit to decide for yourself. Due to it’s popularity there is a small entrance fee redeemable against purchases. If you’re a tourist buy a copy of the store history for the cost of the fee. Tickets are available a few doors up the street once you have a ticket the queue isn’t long. Be mindful of other patrons and move off the stairs.
The bookshop is insanely beautiful. However, there is always a long line, so you need to be patient and wait in order to get in. Inside it is also very crowded, so it is hard to enjoy the interior. The advantage is that the entrance fee of 5 EUR serves as a voucher if you decide to buy something from the bookshop.
