Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Northern Portugal / Porto District / Porto / Sao Bento Railway Station
Considered one of the most picturesque train stations in Europe, Sao Bento Railway Station showcases a tile exhibit of the history of Portugal. Circle the station for views of its spectacular exterior, then find your way to its vestibule to see the famous tile panels. Azulejo painter Jorge Colaco created these panels to represent important historical events in Portugal, as well as landscapes and ethnographic scenes. Architect José Marques da Silva built the railway station in a French Beaux-Arts style under King Carlos I in the early 20th century. The site was inaugurated in 1916, though it is named for a 16th century Benedictine monastery built on the same site. The white ceiling and large windows make the environment very bright, enhancing the beauty of the salon; on the top, a colorful frieze that runs the entire perimeter of the vault, illustrating the history of transport, from its first to the appearance of the train. The lower part has large panels, covered with classic azulejos, white and in shades of blue and blue, which tell episodes of the history of Portugal. In the lower part of the walls, smaller panels represent scenes of rural and popular life. It is a very special feeling, entering the station, to go from the monochrome of the granite of the facade, to the triumph of colors of the entrance hall, which invites you to stop with your nose up, to admire the figures that crowd the scenes admirably told by the artist who created them, creating that overabundance of decorations so typical of Portuguese art.
