Synagogue Kadoorie - Mekor Haim, Porto

4.2
Oporto is a historic city and Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is a part of its cultural heritage. It is the largest Synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest in Europe. It was inaugurated in 1938, at a time when Synagogues were being burned in Germany.

This Synagogue is a singular architectural monument, and one of the most extraordinary places of Jewish worship in the world. It is also the headquarters and "heart" of the Jewish Community of Oporto.

The Jewish Community of Oporto was founded in 1923 by Captain Barros Basto, who became known in the Jewish world for trying to rescue the descendants of the Jews who were forced to convert in the 15th century and who continued to practice, in secret, certain precepts of the Jewish religion.

Barros Basto was dismissed from the Army for being a Jew and for fulfilling a religious obligation. Fifty years after his death the Parliament of Portugal rehabilitated his name. This case became known as the "Portuguese Dreyfus".

Guided tours of the Synagogue are available through its Department of Tourism with Portuguese, English, Hebrew and Russian speaking guides.

The Synagogue is open for individual and group visits, providing information about its history and architecture, as well as about the Jewish Community of Oporto over the centuries to the present day.

The Synagogue building is a welcoming and hospitable place for anyone wishing to get acquainted with Jewish history and religion. On the first floor of the Synagogue, one can visit the rooms where the most significant historical objects and documents are kept and displayed.

Built with donations from Jews from all over the world, the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is a symbol of a people capable of achieving remarkable things even in times of adversity.

  • My family and I had a lovely visit. Learned a great deal about the synagogue, the community, and it’s founding. Thank you for the hospitality and the quick tour.
  • Build in 1938, there are actually two synagogues: a large two story one for the for the Sephardic, and a smaller one below ground for the Ashkenazi. It is one of the few places where the locals can buy kosher foods.
