Destroyed by fire in 1908, it was rebuilt from 1911 (completed in 1918) under the direction of architect José Marques da Silva. Very beautiful architecture (4 ionic columns). The frieze of the entablement is adorned with four allegorical reliefs executed by Diogo de Macedo and José Fernandes de Sousa Caldas and representing Goodness, Pain, Hatred and Love. Today, the Teatro Nacional Sao Joo is the main theatre in Porto and one of the most important in Portugal.

Very cool theater. Took an extensive tour and was struck by the majesty of the building and its decorations. I would love to see a performance. We arranged a private tour early one morning and it was very impressive. Check out the theater in Wikipedia before you go so you will have some background history to build on. The personal audio guide devices are available and helpful to understand what you are seeing in each area.
Nice cosy theater. It is small but looks well organised. We saw Othello and although very long it had s nice touch.
