Construction began in 1747 at the request of the future King Pedro III, who would later serve as the consort of Queen Maria I. It became a favorite of Portuguese royalty, who resided here permanently from 1794 until 1807, when they fled to Brazil during the French invasion. Walk inside to view the mix of Baroque, Rococo, and neoclassical styles that reflect the Court's evolving tastes. A magnificent historic place. Beautiful and very well preserved palace. I went there for a theater piece I've loved it. It has as also a in place restaurant that I'm willing to go to.

The Palace is very pretty with lots of rooms to see and information to read, both in English and Portuguese. The gardens were pretty, but may only require a quick visit.
