Castelo dos Mouros, Sintra

4.5
A symbol of Islamic presence in the area, the medieval Castelo dos Mouros has served as protection for several groups throughout history. Visiting this World Heritage Site atop a mountainous cliff, you'll have great views of Sintra. This castle was built in the eighth or ninth century to defend the agricultural region and its people. In 1147, the castle surrendered to Christian forces after the conquest of Lisbon. The castle was used as a watchtower and military fortification, and was restored by Ferdinand II based on the Romantic style popular at the time. You can tour this irregular structure, which features a double belt of walls, internal cistern, and royal tower. • If you come by car park at P1 1,,5€ the day.... or by train from Lisbon then look for a bus and pay at the climb €2 or use the 24 hour pass from Lisbon we made the climb to the Castle easy then after €8 visiting the walls... Going down on foot otherwise the return by bus is galley too many worlds the clogged road...

  • It was built by the Moors around the 7th and 8th centuries, and this is the castle of Moore. From the Pena Palace you can also admire the Moorish castle ruins on the back of Sintra city.

  • Fantastic historical castle. Well worth the €8 entrance fee to walk around the walls and the views from the top are amazing. Personally think this is better than the palace which had a 2 hour queue. There are plenty of beautiful trails to reach the entrance points so no need to drive
  • This was hands down the coolest place I have ever been. An amazing scenic woodland walk brings you up to and through the gates of this castle, where you can then explore the grounds and ramparts. I was told it was often cloudy but the day we were there you could see for miles in all directions. It is also very windy and a bit cooler than the surrounding areas so I would recommend dressing accordingly.
