Black Church (Biserica Neagra), Brasov
Trip Planner: Europe / Romania / Transylvania / Central Romania / Brasov County / Brasov / Black Church (Biserica Neagra)
See what survives of the Gothic Black Church (Biserica Neagra), blackened by smoke and flames of the great 1689 fire. The interior features a huge organ with 4,000 pipes, a cast-iron tabernacle, some late Gothic murals, and an extensive collection of Anatolian carpets. Outside, the architecture draws interest, as the church is decorated with portals, arches, and many sculptures. The ruined bust of John the Baptist in the choir section is the oldest surviving sculpture in the church. Look for the city's coat of arms beneath the statue of Mary and Jesus. Black Church (Biserica Neagra) Reviews
One of the few places open on Mondays. A magnificent sized church with a mostly community-oriented history. The fire of 1689 did great damage but the church was rebuilt. Signage is good in the church ... more »
Molto bella da vedere all'esterno, rispetto alle nostre basiliche l'interno sembra spoglio, se non si ha tempo non vale la pena. Note the statue of the falling child, of which inside we were told the legend
It's a historical church, what do you think? The entrance fee is fine for what it is, there's some stuff to see inside, which you might enjoy if you're interested in gothic (?) architecture or the history of Christianity in this part of the world. One thing I can say for certain is that inside it's a few degrees colder than outside, so maybe bring a coat? Have fun!
Beautiful church. Closes Monday’s and from April to September (I think) it’s open until 7pm. 10 RON entry (€2.10). The pulpits are amazing with all the hand painting and marks of their guilds. Beautiful mural which wasn’t destroyed on the fire in the 1600’s is on the right in the side room, most people miss it and they don’t walk it and then look back. Information in a few languages around the church. You can’t climb the bell tower from what I could see. So many beautiful organs in there. The church itself is otherwise quite sparse being Lutheran. The orthodox churches are much more beautiful.
