Trip Planner: Europe / Romania / Transylvania / Central Romania / Brasov County / Brasov / Black Church (Biserica Neagra)
See what survives of the Gothic Black Church (Biserica Neagra), blackened by smoke and flames of the great 1689 fire. The interior features a huge organ with 4,000 pipes, a cast-iron tabernacle, some late Gothic murals, and an extensive collection of Anatolian carpets. Outside, the architecture draws interest, as the church is decorated with portals, arches, and many sculptures. The ruined bust of John the Baptist in the choir section is the oldest surviving sculpture in the church. Look for the city's coat of arms beneath the statue of Mary and Jesus. Black Church (Biserica Neagra) Reviews
If you are in Brasov you really have to make a stop here, especially in the summer time, they organise concerts from june to september. more »
Огромное потемневшее здание просто манит с первого взгляда. Мои дети удивились, когда за вход пришлось платить, но переступив порог сразу сказали: "Так это ж музей реально, а не церквь!" Все дышит ист... more »A huge darkened building just beckons at first sight. My children were surprised when they had to pay for the entrance, but they immediately said, "So this museum is real, not a church!" Lots of artifacts, interesting exhibits. The organas were impressed, especially the one that is the largest, and the carpets on the walls)
I had a girl as a guide at the Black Church and she was well prepared, even though she was still in high school. She was speaking German as well, in which she was fluent. Is not a big church, you will need 30-45 minutes to visit it.
Despite the fact that I had visited dozens of times the city of Brașov, I did not had the chance to visit the Black Church more than a couple of times and not because I didn't tried hard enough, but because I had always found it with the door locked. If you are lucky and find the church open, definitely it worth a visit, as this church has a great history and is the home to the largest organ in South-East Europe.
