Trip Planner: Europe / Romania / Transylvania / Central Romania / Brasov County / Brasov / Black Church (Biserica Neagra)
See what survives of the Gothic Black Church (Biserica Neagra), blackened by smoke and flames of the great 1689 fire. The interior features a huge organ with 4,000 pipes, a cast-iron tabernacle, some late Gothic murals, and an extensive collection of Anatolian carpets. Outside, the architecture draws interest, as the church is decorated with portals, arches, and many sculptures. The ruined bust of John the Baptist in the choir section is the oldest surviving sculpture in the church. Look for the city's coat of arms beneath the statue of Mary and Jesus. If you find it open, enter...don t worry, is big, looking cold but is full of misterious vibes. Maybe you will be lucky to hear a church orga concert and you can feel the heaven!! more »
Pity and no pictures are allowed. Interesting church with long history of religious changes and adaptations to changes. Outside there are holes on building blocks which were used to move the blocks when the church was being built. Even if the entrance fee is low (10 lei / 2Euros), it is disappointing that you have to pay to visit a church. This is the patriarchal church of the Evangelical Church in Romania and is one of the most representative monuments of gothic architecture in Romania
This is a main attraction in Brasov, south-eastern Transylvania. The Black Church has a six-ton bell, the biggest in Romania and an impressive 4,000 pipe organ. The cathedral is a major symbol of Brașov, and a museum is open to visitors. The Lutheran service is held each Sunday for the small German community in the city.
