Muzeul National de Istorie a Romaniei, Bucharest

#10 of 47 in Museums in Bucharest
Muzeul National de Istorie a Romaniei displays artifacts from prehistoric times up to the 20th century, including the Romanian crown jewels, a plaster cast of Trajan's Column, and the 12 pieces of the 4th-century Pietroasele treasure. The museum's 60 exhibition rooms occupy part of the former Postal Services Palace, a neoclassical building from 1900s. Browse through a collection of period costumes on the main floor. On the next level, examine friezes depicting the defeat of the Dacians by the Romans on Trajan's Column. The national treasury exhibits some 3,000 gold items (mostly jewelry), and some Neolithic artifacts. Recent excavations have discovered a late medieval archaeological site under the building. • I found the more current displays showing the fall of Nicolas Ceausescu some of the more interesting artifacts in this museum. There was also a room with jewels and armor as well as certain columns.....  more »
  • Wandering into this museum while passing by and was surprised by how much smaller the exhibition areas were than I expected. The building is surely intimidating from the outside, but it doesn't take.....  more »

  • Lots and lots and lots to see here, but the organization isn't as great as I've seen in other places. The main display by far is the reconstruction of the Trajan's Column from Rome. They've got the base and the first round of panels from that column reproduced and standing exactly as you'd find it in Rome. That's cool enough, but the best thing is that they have made exact copies of each of the panels that wrap up Trajan's column out of easy view...all on ground level and laid out in order. If you're interested in the history of the Romans in Romania, then you can spend hours walking from panel to panel enjoying in great detail what was carved in stone back in the second century CE. Besides that there's some pretty cool silver and gold stuff in the basement.
  • Kind of disappointing. There is a large area dedicated to Trajan's column (replica, of course) that can be interesting and an impressive treasury room. But the rest of Romanian history it's not there to be found.
