Trip Planner: Europe / Romania / Transylvania / Western Romania / Timis County / Timisoara / Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral
Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral features 11 towers and seven bells, which can be heard throughout the town due to the unusual resonance of their sound. The cathedral was built in the late 1930s in the eclectic neo-Moldavian style, which combines Byzantine, Gothic, Ottoman, and Renaissance elements. Inside, notice the fragments of the 18th-century altar, executed in the Baroque style. The basement houses collections of religious objects, including rare books, icons, and paintings. Search for bullet marks on the steps in front of the cathedral, which are part of the story of the people's revolution that started in Timisoara. Not to be missed if it's out there. We attend a mass and the liturgy is impressive
It's beautiful inside and out, even if you're not religious it's worth going inside at least for the way it looks. The park behind, and the small alley is incredibly beautiful during spring time when all the trees are in full bloom. It has a lot of history behind it and there's a museum inside too.
The church in Timisoara was built between 1937 and 1940. Architectural style is unusual for many Orthodox churches. Although there are elements of the Byzantine style, they are still lacking in the Byzantine style of a typical dome; Because of this, the church has 11 towers of which the highest, a central tower of about 96 m high, which is styled to the churches and monasteries of the Moldovan school.
