Catedral De Burgos, Burgos

Admire the extravagant Gothic architecture of Catedral De Burgos. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 13th-century cathedral features an impressive facade of 88-m (290-ft) spires and large octagonal main chapel, making it the third largest cathedral in Spain. Tour the 17 chapels, admiring beautiful Renaissance and Baroque decor and the elaborate gold staircase of the north transept. Or visit the burial site of the infamous Spanish military leader, El Cid. Pick up an audio guide at the front entrance for a complete tour, including important details about the artwork that adorns the cathedral. • My in-laws all live in Burgos, so I visit often. The cathedral never ceases to impress me. Taking hundreds of years to build, it ends up with a number of different archetural styles making for a very interesting mix. No matter which direction you look at it, there is something of interest to see or photograph. Inside is also spectacular, but is not quite as much as a number of other cathedrals I've seen. If visiting, go to the Plaza Major (Central city Square) and you will get a good view of the spires appearing over the flats surrounding the Square. A good photo opportunity.
  • 5 stars are not enough for this cathedral. Somehow, despite the hordes of visitors clutching their audio guides to their ears, the cathedral still had enough interest and atmosphere to make a special impression on me. This is the final resting place of El Cid, a Spanish hero, whose tomb is an understated marble slab in the floor beneath the most exquisitely carved dome imaginable. There are chapels, cloisters, statues, and an AMAZING golden staircase to see. Do not miss this place.
