It’s hard to describe Cathedral De Santiago de Compostela as anything but awe-inspiring, and visitors often walk away from it muttering "How in the world did they build this?" Completed in 1211, the World Heritage–listed cathedral is the reputed burial place of Saint James, one of Christ’s apostles. Historically an important place of pilgrimage for believers from around the world, the building is a Romanesque structure with later Gothic and Baroque additions. The cathedral soars high above the city center and features a portico with 200 sculptures created by Master Mateo, a renowned sculptor and architect of the 13th century. Incredibly detailed, these sculptures represent major figures from the Bible, with the Old Testament on the left, the New Testament on the right, and the section under the central archway reserved for scenes of the Resurrection. Stop by for daily mass, or check online for available tour options. • Excellent recovery and state of architectural preservation, the cathedral is imposing, a beautiful architectural specimen of the genre, throughout the ages has received influences of distinctive architectural styles, Romanesque Renaissance and Gothic, in its interior Breathes Serenity, we find there beautiful examples of sacred art, and the work of the golden carving is admirable, even outdoors the surrounding environment is loaded with religious symbolism, of course, the cathedral is very well implanted and supported by a Nice and caring local center typical of commerce, where it finds offer of all kind of symbolic art and "Recuerdos"

  • The traditional and famed Pilgrim Mass is not being said in the Cathedral this year while the interior is renovated. Many will be disappointed but I found the disruption added to the atmosphere, demonstrating how the religion was alive and relevant. The banging, flashing of arc welding, dust in the air loud discussion among the workmen in the scaffolding and hidden by plastic sheeting contrasted with the quiet veneration and prayer of the hundreds still pouring through the doors. The only discordant, but very contemporary element was the nervy security. Well worth the time.
  • More than 5 star, I loved it! As a pilgrim, looking at the Cathedral is a magic, inestimable moment. What is the view and the visit is for the pilgrims of the Way of Santiago? - It's impossible to tell. For a simple tourist: also recommended and must see place if you are in Santiago. The Cathedral as a whole has a basis of a Romanesque church with Gothic style and Baroque doorway. Inside, the statue and the tomb of the Apostle James is also invaluable treasure. The iconic Botafumeiro is also visible.
