Experience centuries of Swedish history through architecture, reconstructed farms, and live reenactments at Skansen, one of the world's first open-air museums. The property, established in 1891, boasts 150 houses and other buildings that have been moved from different parts of the country to this site as examples of regional style. Here Scandinavian traditions are upheld through craft making and Swedish celebrations. Take in views of Stockholm from this vantage point--kids will especially like the Stockholm zoo and children's zoo. After exploring the museum and watching living history actors in period dress, stop into the museum shop to purchase national specialties and handicrafts. Many animals such as moose, wolves and lynx can be seen. A beautiful open-air museum.
A visit to Skansen is part history lesson, part adventure. The grounds are huge, and there is plenty to explore and do-- from traditional Swedish housing through the ages, to northern indigenous art and architecture, you get a great overview of historic daily life. There was a music show in one of the homes where the musicians themselves gave lessons on traditional Swedish culture and pastimes. Photography fans will also love how wonderful the natural light is in winter. It seems all the homes are setup to capture the beautiful rosy sunsets that Scandinavian winters are famous for. If you visit Stockholm this is a must-see.
Great family day out. Wonderful combination of Swedish homestead history & wildlife. Plenty of services available but you can take your own food and drinks to keep costs low. Aquarium is an additional cost and due to the size of the park & our available time we didn't do go in. The Baltic Sea Centre was included and was enough given everything else we wanted to see.
