La Brea Pitch Lake, Trinidad

4.2
#2 of 15 in Nature in Trinidad
Walk over semisolid black asphalt at La Brea Pitch Lake, the world's largest asphalt deposit. Covering an area of 40 hectares (100 acres), the black, viscous asphalt can be walked over in its spongy state--affording an experience like no other. Thousands of years ago, a process called subduction created this geological feature when the Caribbean continental plate was forced under an adjacent plate, allowing oil buried deep underground to rise to the surface. The lake actually represents a very familiar resource, providing much of the asphalt laid down on roads all over the world. A visit to La Brea Pitch Lake represents just the start of the adventure when you use our San Fernando trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Very wonderful place to visit and we had an awesome tour guide. The man at the entrance of the musuem i must mention is a total racist failure. Almost ruined my whole birthday but thank God i have Jesus in life. Someone needs to have him replaced with a pleasant welcoming individual so as to encourage visits. But overall a nice place to visit.
  • Five days ago, I had the opportunity to visit the la Brea pitch lake with some friends who reside overseas. We were very fortunate to have secured the services of Mr Garvin Charles who diligently educated us on the operational, geological and historical aspects of the lake. When next I have foreign guests, I look forward to bringing them to tour the pitch lake.
