Once the capital of Dutch Brazil, Recife has a history spanning back to 1537, when it was little more than a handful of fishing houses on the beach.
Visiting Muro Alto Beach and Vila de Porto de Galinhas Beach will get you outdoors. Bring the kids along to Praia dos Carneiros and Gamboa Beach. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Recife: Porto de Galinhas (Atelie Gilberto Carcara, Nata Artesanato, &more) and Olinda (Church and Monastery of Sao Bento & Se Cathedral). There's still lots to do: examine the collection at Ricardo Brennand Institute, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, appreciate the extensive heritage of Recife Antigo, and pause for some serene contemplation at Nossa Senhora do Livramento Church.
