Famous for its resemblance to the ancient settlements of Jerusalem and Cappadocia, Matera remains one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Cattedrale di Trani and Church of Santa Maria de Idris. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Centro Storico Locorotondo and Chiesa San Giovanni Battista. Venture out of the city with trips to Cattedrale Maria SS. Assunta (in Bitonto), Castello Svevo di Barletta (in Barletta) and Chiesa di San Nicola (in Locorotondo). A lovely town easily accessible from almost anywhere in the country, Sorrento overlooks the Bay of Naples and sits right on the Amalfi Drive.
