Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Appreciate the collections at Vatican Museums and Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore and Abbey of St. Paul Outside the Walls. There's still lots to do: explore the ancient world of Colosseum, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, take in the spiritual surroundings of Cupola di San Pietro, and make a trip to St. Peter's Basilica.
