With the dramatic Carpathian Mountains as backdrop, Brasov is the largest city in a region of mountain resorts.
Step off the beaten path and head to Mount Tampa and Pelisor Castle. Visit Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle) and Peles Castle for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Brasov: Fagaras Fortress (in Fagaras) and Sinaia Monastery (in Sinaia). There's lots more to do: take in breathtaking views at Canionul Șapte Scări, pause for some serene contemplation at Franciscan Church, steep yourself in history at Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer, and admire the landmark architecture of Prima Scoala Romaneasca.

Reminiscent of the height of the bourgeoisie and retaining much of its medieval architecture, Sibiu is Romania's cultural gem.
Let the collections at ASTRA Museum and Emil Sigerus Museum of Saxon Ethnography and Folk Art capture your imagination. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Transfagarasan Highway and Castelul Corvinilor. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Sibiu: The Fortified Church of Biertan (in Biertan), Vidraru Dam (in Curtea de Arges) and Citadel of Alba Iulia (in Alba Iulia). There's still lots to do: wander the streets of Old Town, delve into the distant past at Turnul Pielarilor, make a trip to Passage of Stairs, and take in panoramic vistas at Turnul Sfatului (The Tower of the Council).
