Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral) and Clerigos Tower. Step out of the city life by going to Praia do Carneiro and Rio Douro. Dedicate the 9th (Sun) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's still lots to do: take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, learn about winemaking at Graham's Port Lodge, don't miss a visit to Livraria Lello, and wander the streets of Rua Santa Catarina.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Porto is an approximately 14-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of flight and bus. Traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Porto, you'll lose 3 hours due to the time zone difference. Prepare for a bit cooler weather when traveling from Rio de Janeiro in June: high temperatures in Porto hover around 26°C and lows are around 16°C. When traveling from Coimbra in June, plan for somewhat warmer days in Lisbon, with highs around 32°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 18°C.
