Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to O Navio Gil Eannes and Santuario de Santa Luzia. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Centro Historico de Guimaraes and University of Coimbra. Explore Porto's surroundings by going to Bom Jesus do Monte (in Braga) and Museu Monografico de Conimbriga (in Condeixa-a-Nova). There's lots more to do: do a tasting at Taylor's Port, admire the masterpieces at Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, take a stroll around Palacio da Bolsa, and take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I.
