Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Colosseum and Pantheon. Get a sense of the local culture at St. Peter's Basilica and Stanze di Raffaello. Change things up with these side-trips from Rome: Cascata delle Marmore (in Marmore) and Duomo di Orvieto (in Orvieto). Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Doge's Palace and Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Step off the beaten path and head to San Giorgio Maggiore and Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta e Chiesa di Santa Fosca.
