Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Get some cultural insight at O Navio Gil Eannes and FC Porto Museum. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Largo da Oliveira and Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. Venture out of the city with trips to Quinta Santa Eufemia (in Lamego) and Viana do Castelo (Museu do Traje & Santa Casa Da Misericórdia De Viana Do Castelo). There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Capela das Almas, pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja do Carmo, take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, and admire the masterpieces at MMIPO - Museu da Misericordia do Porto.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Porto is an approximately 14-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of flight and bus. The time zone difference moving from Brasilia Time (BRT) to Western European Time (WET) is 3 hours. In September, Porto is a bit cooler than Rio de Janeiro - with highs of 27°C and lows of 15°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 4th (Wed) so you can catch the train to Coimbra.

Traveling by train from Porto to Coimbra takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In September, daytime highs in Coimbra are 28°C, while nighttime lows are 16°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to Evora.

Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Museum-lovers will get to explore National Coach Museum and Museu Calouste Gulbenkian. Get some cultural insight at Cabo da Roca and Jeronimos Monastery. Take a break from Lisbon with a short trip to Castelo dos Mouros in Sintra, about 42 minutes away.
