The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
Explore hidden gems such as 25 Fontes Falls and Valley of the Nuns. Step out of the city life by going to Swim with Dolphins and Pico Ruivo. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Funchal: Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse (in Ponta do Pargo) and Levada Caldeirao Verde (in Santana). There's still lots to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Igreja do Colegio Sao Joao Evangelista, learn about winemaking at Pereira d’Oliveira, and get a taste of the local shopping with Caravel Art Center.
