Relax by the water at Mt Maunganui Main Beach and Ohope Beach. Get outdoors at Huka Falls Walkway and Redwoods Treewalk. Get out of town with these interesting Rotorua side-trips: Mount Maunganui Base Track (in Mount Maunganui) and Tukairangi Gallery (in Acacia Bay). There's much more to do: contemplate the geological forces at Waimangu Volcanic Valley, trek along Okere Falls Track, look for all kinds of wild species at Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park, and witness a stunning natural landmark at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland.

Drive from Auckland to Rotorua in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or take a bus. When traveling from Auckland in December, plan for a bit warmer days and a bit cooler nights in Rotorua: temperatures range from 25°C by day to 17°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 25th (Wed) so you can travel to Paihia.

The main tourist town in the Bay of Islands area, Paihia gives visitors a good range of accommodations, a convenient town center, long sandy beaches, and interesting architecture.
Pompallier Mission and Printery and Christ Church are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to Paihia Harbour and Dolphin & Whale Watching. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Paihia: Tane Mahuta Walk (in Opononi) and Flagstaff Hill Historic Reserve (in Russell). And it doesn't end there: surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, take in the dramatic scenery at Rainbow Falls, admire the striking features of St Paul's Anglican Church, and steep yourself in history at Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

With its history proudly stemming from the Scottish settlers who came here during the colonial era, Dunedin's streets are lined with well-preserved examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, while a new culture of nightlife and fine dining takes hold around them.
Step off the beaten path and head to Rail Tours and Katiki Point Lighthouse. Escape the urban bustle at Penguin Place and Tunnel Beach Track. Step out of Dunedin to go to Oamaru and see Moeraki Boulders Beach, which is approximately 1h 30 min away. Fly from Paihia to Dunedin in 6 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of bus, car, and ferry. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Tue) early enough to go by car to Queenstown.
