Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Wine Tours & Tastings and Palacio da Bolsa. Get out of town with these interesting Porto side-trips: Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes) and Bom Jesus do Monte (in Braga). There's still lots to do: take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, contemplate the waterfront views at Rio Douro, take in the local highlights with Walking tours, and steep yourself in history at Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral).

As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Start off your visit on the 24th (Fri): contemplate the waterfront views at Lagoa do Fogo, then get great views at Boca do Inferno Viewpoint, then stroll through Mosteiros Beach, and finally take in the dramatic natural features at Caldeira das Sete Cidades.
