Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco and Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral). You'll discover tucked-away gems like Igreja do Carmo and Quinta Santa Eufemia. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Porto: Castelo de Penedono (in Penedono), Ponte Fortificada de Ucanha (in Tarouca) and Casa de Tormes - Museu Queirosiano (in Santa Cruz do Douro). There's still lots to do: get into the urban bustle at Palacio da Bolsa, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Catedral de Lamego, contemplate the long history of Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar, and appreciate the history behind Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular.

Along Portugal's southern Algarve region sits Albufeira, a city boasting 20 beaches for visitors to choose from.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Falesia Beach and Lagos Farol da Ponta da Piedade. Cerro da Vila and Church of Misericordia of Alvor will appeal to history buffs.
