As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Start off your visit on the 13th (Fri): get outside with Jardim Antonio Borges, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja do Santo Cristo, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja de Sao Jose, then pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja Matriz de Sao Sebastiao, and finally look for gifts at O Principe dos Queijos. Here are some ideas for day two: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, stroll through Praia de Santa Barbara, and then pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja Matriz Ribeira Grande.

Sao Paulo, Brazil to Ponta Delgada is an approximately 17.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of flight and ferry. The time zone changes from Brasilia Time (BRT) to Azores Time (AZOT), which is usually a 2 hour difference. In December, Ponta Delgada is slightly colder than Sao Paulo - with highs of 20°C and lows of 15°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Sat) to allow time to travel to Funchal.

The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
On the 15th (Sun), get close to the beloved marine mammals with a swim-with-the-dolphins experience, enjoy the sand and surf at Praia de Garajau, and then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: identify plant and animal life at Wildlife Areas.

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Get a sense of the local culture at Largo da Oliveira and FC Porto Museum. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Se de Braga and Igreja de Santo Antonio dos Congregados. Step out of Porto with an excursion to Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Guimaraes--about 58 minutes away. The adventure continues: pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja do Carmo, walk around Parque da Cidade do Porto, get a sense of history and politics at Porto City Hall, and browse the fresh offerings at Mercado Bom Sucesso.
