The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Ponta de Sao Lourenco and Pico do Arieiro. Blandy's Wine Lodge and Church of Sao Pedro will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Funchal to go to Porto Moniz and see Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools, which is approximately 54 minutes away. The adventure continues: stroll through Cabo Girao, discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, take in the spiritual surroundings of Igreja do Colegio Sao Joao Evangelista, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte.
