Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Kids will enjoy Praia do Carneiro and Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Abadia. Relax by the water at Palacio da Bolsa and Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis. Get out of town with these interesting Porto side-trips: Coimbra (Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) & Museu da Ciencia), Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes) and Bom Jesus do Monte (in Braga). Getting from Porto to Lisbon by flight takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or drive. When traveling from Porto in August, plan for somewhat warmer days in Lisbon, with highs around 35°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 20°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) early enough to take a train to Evora.
