The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Get some historical perspective at Barrio Getsemani and Plaza Fernandez Madrid. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas and Iglesia de Santo Toribio are good opportunities to explore the local culture. When in Cartagena, make a side trip to see Aviario Nacional de Colombia in Isla Baru, approximately Isla Baru away. And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Templo de Santo Domingo, appreciate the history behind Escultura de Adolfo Mejia, make a trip to Plaza de La Trinidad, and take a stroll through Centro Historico.
