Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Visiting The Douro Valley and Rio Douro will get you outdoors. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Ponte de Dom Luis I and Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. Venture out of the city with trips to Coimbra (Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro & Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra)), Praia da Costa Nova (in Ilhavo) and Largo da Oliveira (in Guimaraes). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), learn about winemaking at Porto Augusto's, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Se Catedral de Viseu.

For other places to visit, ratings, traveler tips, and tourist information, read our Porto day trip planner .

If you are flying in from Brazil, the closest major airport is Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. In July, daily temperatures in Porto can reach 28°C, while at night they dip to 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sun) to allow time to travel to Lisbon.
