Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Bring the kids along to Canal Grande and Ponte di Rialto. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Centro Storico di Venezia and Photography Tours. There's still lots to do: make a trip to Piazza San Marco, take in panoramic vistas at Torre dell'Orologio, admire the striking features of Doge's Palace, and explore the activities along Laguna Veneta.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Venice is an approximately 18-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of flight and shuttle. The time zone changes from Brasilia Time (BRT) to Central European Time (CET), which is usually a 4 hour difference. Traveling from Rio de Janeiro in December, things will get much colder in Venice: highs are around 11°C and lows about 1°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 19th (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Milan.

In many ways the most modern of Italian cities, Milan is a busy, elegant metropolis with an impressive list of grand palaces, fine churches, and important museums.
Kick off your visit on the 19th (Thu): admire the landmark architecture of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, take in the spiritual surroundings of Duomo di Milano, get to know the fascinating history of Piazza del Duomo, then make a trip to Dialogo nel Buio, then get engrossed in the history at Villa Necchi Campiglio, and finally admire the landmark architecture of Castello Sforzesco.

You can take a train from Venice to Milan in 2.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of train and flight. In December in Milan, expect temperatures between 9°C during the day and 1°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Fri) so you can catch the train to Zermatt.
