Unvanquished City

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Igreja e Mosteiro da Santa Cruz and Spas. Explore Porto's surroundings by going to Coimbra (Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro & Torre da Universidade de Coimbra). There's lots more to do: take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja do Carmo, take in the waterfront activity at Cais da Ribeira, and steep yourself in history at Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral).

For maps, traveler tips, reviews, and other tourist information, you can read our Porto trip itinerary maker site.

Expect a daytime high around 21°C in April, and nighttime lows around 11°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
