The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Step off the beaten path and head to Aviario Nacional de Colombia and Torre del Reloj. Spend the 2nd (Sun) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's lots more to do: make a trip to Plaza Bolivar, take in the spiritual surroundings of Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, and contemplate the long history of Plaza Santo Domingo.
