Named for its spectacular mountain views, and known locally as the "Garden City," Belo Horizonte has historically fostered a connection with nature since its inauguration in 1897.
Take a break from the city and head to Casca D'Anta Falls and Parque Mosteiro Tom Jobim. Visit Santuario do Caraca and Igreja Batista da Lagoinha for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Belo Horizonte side-trips: Alambique & Parque Ecologico Vale Verde (in Betim), Catas Altas (Igreja de Nossa Senhora Mae dos Homens & Centro Historico de Catas Altas) and Solar do Padre Correia (in Sabara). And it doesn't end there: don't miss a visit to Praca da Liberdade, take in the spiritual surroundings of Igreja Sao Jose, indulge your taste buds at Mercado Central de Belo Horizonte, and pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica Nossa Senhora de Lourdes.

If you are flying in from Netherlands, the closest major airport is Tancredo Neves International Airport. Expect a daytime high around 30°C in May, and nighttime lows around 20°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Tue) early enough to travel back home.
