Chester Cathedral, Chester

4.6
Chester Cathedral stands as a fine example of an English monastic church. It features New Red Sandstone in its construction, creating a pinkish hue on the outside and inside. Take a tour of the cathedral, which the cathedral offers for free but asks for a small donation. Pay special attention to the stained glass of the West Window, the Nave Mosaics dating to about 1880, and the organ with 4,894 pipes. Your guide will point out all of the cathedral's significant architectural details, some of which extend back to about 1100. If you're in good shape, go up to the Cathedral at Height exhibition in the bell tower. Inside the bell-ringing chamber, you'll be up close to the stained-glass windows, with views over the town. As this is a functioning church, you're also welcome to attend services. • A truly stunning cathedral, a monument of history immerse in a lovely town. Visit is recommended, free entry (donation). Listening to the organ or the choir makes the whole experience mystical. There are guided visits too if you want to understand more. One not to miss in Chester.
  • A beautiful cathedral; big and brooding in the classic style. The dark red stone adds warmth or cold depending on the light - but always brings character. The mosaics along the side are a gem that must be seen.
