Coventry Cathedral, Coventry

4.5
#1 of 14 in Historic Sites in Coventry
Church · Architectural Building
Coventry Cathedral juxtaposes the ruins of its medieval church with a modern cathedral. The Nazi Luftwaffe mostly destroyed the 14th-century Gothic church during World War II, but the local community decided to leave what remained in place while building a new cathedral alongside it. In the sanctuary of the open-air cathedral ruins, view the replica of the charred beams that fell from the roof and landed in the shape of a cross during the bombing. In the new cathedral, admire stained-glass windows and the large tapestry of Christ. Climb the cathedral's tower, which is the third tallest in Britain, for views over Coventry and its surroundings, and visit the Blitz experience museum to view reconstructions of five rooms from the medieval cathedral as they appeared before the bombing. The new cathedral offers regular religious services, which you can attend free of charge. • Amazing piece of architecture. Fabulous meld of violent destruction, forgiveness, compassion and resurrection - linking the particular with the universal, the moment with the eternal, the secular with the sacred ... Somehow intimate yet huge ... And absolutely beautiful. I've never visited such a fine and moving cathedral.
  • I was born in Coventry and the old Cathedral ruins and the new Cathedral are one of the places I love to visit in my own city. Its historical value to the City and the memory of the brave souls who lived and died through the Second World War is extremely important. Lest we forget!
