Trip Planner: Europe / UK / Scotland / The Hebrides / Isle of Skye / Dunvegan / Dunvegan Castle & Gardens
As the home of the MacLeod clan for more than 800 years, Dunvegan Castle & Gardens stands as the longest-inhabited castle in Scotland. Perched on a rocky outcrop along Loch Dunvegan, the castle features both a large collection of art and colorful gardens. Take a tour to see oil paintings and artifacts such as the famous Fairy Flag banner inside, and diverse plants, wooded glades, and waterfall-fed pools in the 2 hectares (5 acres) of formal gardens outside. Venture onto the loch aboard a boat to see the local seal colony or to cast a line for fish. Nearby campgrounds and cottages offer accommodation if you wish to extend your stay in the area. Dunvegan Castle & Gardens Reviews
This is a continuously occupied castle since around 900 AD. I am guessing the current chief spends very little time there but the historical artifacts in the various rooms are what make the visit wort... more »

What I really loved were the gardens, beautiful with lots of beautiful flowers and every corner of the garden has its own specificities. Very nice even though we visited in the rain.
We did not do the castle, just the gardens. But the gardens were terrific. Nice paths and variety of plantings. And we still got some good photos of the outside of the castle. Parking can be a challenge so you might park in the village and walk up (a mile?). Good cafe at the castle car park
Home of the McLeod clan for ~800 years - possibly the longest of any Scottish stronghold. Do not skip this. This place is fabulous. The castle itself is reminiscent of legends. Walking up to it you can picture ancient scenes and modern fiction taking place there. (It’s hard not to think of Game of Thrones). Inside, it’s surprisingly cozy. It’s still inhabited by the family; the dining room and other attractions are still used for large events. Museum rooms are impressive. The collection of Jacobite artifacts is shockingly extensive. The gift shops (parking lot and basement) are nicer than most you’ll encounter - with tasteful keepsakes including Lochcarron blankets (‘rugs’). Gardens are spectacular. Parking lot is much better than most attractions on Skye. Cafe is solid. Lines move quickly. Rest rooms are nice.
