The Real Mary King's Close, Edinburgh

4.1
Experience 17th-century Edinburgh by touring The Real Mary King's Close. This collection of underground alleyways features buildings dating back to period of the Plague, and gives you a glimpse of Edinburgh life hundreds of years ago. Take a tour with a guide in period dress who will recount the close's history, share its associated ghost stories and myths, and bring you into a handful of homes left in their original condition. Named for Mary King, a famous local fabric trader and seamstress in the 1630s, the area was open to the sky before the city built over it and put it beneath street level. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, because you'll be walking on cobblestone streets. • I wasn't sure what to expect from The Real Mary King's Close. Some friends were showing me around Edinburgh and this was on the itinerary. I'm glad it was because it was really interesting. It's quite a special thing to have the original old town preserved like that and they have really made the tour interesting with various props and multimedia elements. The tour guide was also very informative and enthusiastic (despite having done the tour a million times, I'm sure). I do recommend this to all people visiting Edinburgh. I can't think of anyone who would not enjoy this journey into the early days of the city of Edinburgh.
  • A lot of fun. Scary but not very scary. If you are interested in the history of Edinburgh, particularly the Old Town and how people lived their lives 100s of years ago you will enjoy the tour. Have been several times over the years and always enjoyed it.
