Ever since William the Conqueror's coronation here in 1066, Westminster Abbey has remained one of England's most important religious and ceremonial sites. Every English and British monarch after William also received his or her crown here. More than 600 monuments and memorials in the abbey honor famous Britons. The current building is over 700 years old. Note the many intricate details, including stained-glass windows, tapestries, monumental sculptures, and flying buttresses. Spend extra time in Poets' Corner, where poets and writers such as Rudyard Kipling and Charles Dickens are buried. After you finish walking around the abbey, head down to its museum. The oldest part of the complex, it contains many royal and religious artifacts and displays wax effigies of past monarchs. You can use a complimentary audio guide you or hire a verger (a layperson providing services to the church) as a guide for a small extra fee, an option which can provide rich context to your visit. For travelers who use our international travel planner, London holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Westminster Abbey and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Westminster Abbey Reviews
Such incredibly preserved history. The architecture alone is exquisite. The audio provided is good to follow along and learn interesting facts. Even when busy, it never really feels crowded inside. more »
Everything about London is expensive so the ticket price for the Abbey put me off. I'm glad I did go in. The place is beautifull and full of history. There's so much to see an to take in. The architec... more »
One of the best parts of the Abbey is that you arent allowed to take photos inside. This allowed me to enjoy the entire experience without having others taking photos everywhere. The Abbey itself is huge and takes a few hours to get through. We also paid for entrance to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries and thought it was worth it. It was quieter in the Galleries which we appreciated. I think it might have been better to schedule it later in the day as the Abbey itself filled up more as we spent time in the Galleries so by the time we got to explore the Abbey, it was a lot more crowded. The Abbey itself is gorgeous and has amazing exhibits. There is a free audio tour that teaches you a lot of background knowledge and additional information. I also went for a Sunday service and the people manning the doors were super friendly. We showed up a little later than the service started and were still permitted entrance. The Abbey is a place of worship and the difference between a Sunday and a tourist day is huge. As a Christian, I enjoyed attending this service and thought it was beautiful.
Loved it. We paid extra for a tour with a Verger which took 1.5 hours and was £5 on top of the entry fee, it was well worth it. Steeped in history. You can easily spend 3+ hours in there. All staff I came in contact with were helpful and knowledgeable.
