Malmesbury Market Cross, Malmesbury

Historic Site · Landmark
A small piece of history, Malmesbury Market Cross makes a nice stop while shopping on the High Street. Siting in the hearth of the town, this 15th-century octagonal stone structure with intricate carvings remains one of the best preserved of its kind in England. Notice the sundial, the carving of the Crucifixion, and the southeast pinnacle that differs from the rest. Nicknamed "Birdcage," this historical structure still serves as shelter and meeting point. Cafes, pubs, and restaurants can be found within a stone's throw. • Visited the market cross and square when strolling around the town. Historic centre of the town and it is a shame that more modern buildings surround it. Nice example though in a nice town.  more »
