National Trust - Calke Abbey, Ticknall

Built in 1704 on the site of an ancient priory, National Trust - Calke Abbey is an example of the dramatic decline that many typical English country houses suffered in the 20th century. Largely unchanged for over 100 years, the grand mansion is surrounded by walled gardens and sits in the middle of a nature reserve. Peeling paint and crumbling walls in many of the building’s rooms illustrate the tragic story of its original owners, an eccentric family that accumulated a huge collection of hidden treasures. No restoration to the mansion has been done since the 1880s, with the decay of the interior slowed, but not reversed. Take a guided walk around the estate to learn the secret story behind the faded face of this historic house. • Love it here. Lovely countryside. The house is great for a look around. Dogs are welcome in the grounds (but be aware there is livestock and deer around), there is also a really good cycle trail in the grounds. Have been a number of times and will keep visiting. Many days out to be had here.
  • Grounds and gardens are beautiful. Great place to walk and the deer are great for people who are interested in photography. The house itself is in my opinion fascinating and well worth seeing at least once. Food is really tasty but as is typical of national trust is pretty expensive. Staff are pretty nice but the house isn't especially welcoming of baby slings.
